Networking Home Projects

These home labs are to showcase what I have done at home with the sole purpose to try and get some real-life experience with the knowledge I have acquire.

Network Setup & Security Enhancement
  • OSI and TCP/IP Models: Understand the layers of the OSI model and the TCP/IP model, including their protocols and how they interact.

  • IP Addressing: Knowledge of IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, subnetting.

  • Subnetting: Ability to perform subnetting, identify subnets, and calculate network addresses

  • MAC Addressing: Understand the role of MAC addresses in Ethernet networks and how they are used for Layer 2 communication.

  • Ethernet and Switching: Understand Ethernet standards (10/100/1000 Mbps), frame structure, and how switches operate (Layer 2).

  • VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks): Ability to create and manage VLANs, understand VLAN tagging, and inter-VLAN routing.

  • STP (Spanning Tree Protocol): Understand how STP prevents loops in Layer 2 networks and how to configure and troubleshoot STP.

  • Switch Port Security: Configure and manage switch port security features to protect against unauthorized access.

  • Routing Basics: Understand the purpose of routers, routing tables, and how routing decisions are made.

  • Routing Protocols: Understand the operation of basic dynamic routing protocols, such as RIP, OSPF and EIGRP.

  • Static Routing: Configure and troubleshoot static routes for IPv4

  • Default Routing: Configure default routes for handling traffic to unknown destinations.

Home Lab 1

Objective: Set-up Windows Server environment to practice Active Directory management and network configuration

Tools and Technologies: VirtualBox, Windows Server 2022, Active Directory tools, Group Policy Management Console, Windows 10 enterprise.

Tasks:

· Installed and configured Windows Server 2022 on a virtual machine

· Set up and managed Active Directory, including creating and managing user accounts, groups, and organizational units.

· Implemented Group Policy Objects to enforce security policies.

· Set up file sharing within the AD environment.

Home Lab 2

Objective: Set-up a secure home office network for users (10), sharable printer, and IOT devices.

Tools and Technologies: Ubiquiti router, TP-Link Mesh, Cisco switches, Raspberry Pi, Zigbee dongle, Ring cameras, VLAN(s) to create separate networks.

Task:

· Connect 10 users to securely share files and access the internet and give two of those user administrator rights.

· Set-up shared printer for everyone to use

· Set-up Raspberry Pi to control IoT devices locally (switches, lightbulbs, cameras) and give access remotely

· Assign Static IP to PC(s), printer(s) and Iot devices.

· Set-up router to only allow specific IP and MAC addresses to be allow inside the network.

· Set-up switches to only allow Specific MAC addresses inside the network close unused ports.

· Create Vlan(s) to separate Iot devices from home office network.

· Set-up mesh devices and configure WPA2/WPA3 security.

Configure guest Wi-Fi to limit bandwidth to those users with Qos
